Get to know Erica Hornthal

Ever since I can remember, I have loved helping people, listening to people, and sitting with them during a time of need.  This love turned into a career as I have been practicing as a clinical counselor in various settings including adult day programs, residential treatment facilities, hospitals, and private practice for 15 years. Dancing since I was young inspired me to explore the intersection of movement and mental health. I’m passionate about supporting my clients’ emotional wellbeing through verbal as well as nonverbal communication, and creating a holistic approach to mental health from the inside out. My training in traditional talk therapy brought me to the understanding that we do not always have the words to express what we are feeling. My education in somatics and movement taught me that movement is life and how we move through life physically mirrors how we move through life emotionally.  Helping and listening is not just about the words, but the narrative that is written in the body. The integration of verbal processing along with body awareness, nonverbal communication, and nervous system regulation is the cornerstone of my work, allowing for clients to finally free themselves from patterns of thought and behavior keeping them stuck, immobile, and unable to move on.

About Erica Hornthal

Erica Hornthal, a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor and Board-Certified
Dance/Movement Therapist, has many years of experience working with clients from all
walks of life.  Erica attended graduate school for Dance/Movement Therapy and
Counseling, where she was inspired to bring somatics, movement, body awareness,
and mindfulness into the psychotherapeutic relationship. While Erica has a passion for
somatic work, she is also trained and well versed in traditional psychotherapy
interventions. Her style is person-centered, cognitive behavioral, experiential, and
trauma-informed. Erica tailors her approach to each client and understands that each
individual has unique circumstances that bring them into treatment. She has
experience in working with anxiety and mood disorders, cognitive and movement
disorders, as well as challenging life transitions, attachment wounds, trauma,
caregiving, grief and loss.  She has a gift for helping her clients move through stuck
emotions, release past trauma, and rewire unhealthy habits and patterns. Erica loves to
educate on the mind-body connection and empower clients to build a secure attachment
with their own embodied experiences. Outside of private practice, Erica is an advocate
for the field of dance/movement therapy and works hard to create more visibility for the
work. Erica recently published the award-winning book, Body Aware, and is releasing
another publication in March 2024.
